The Chaalis Abbey
The Chaalis abbey - Castle side
The convent, turned Château, was built by Jean Aubert in the 18th century next to the vestige of an ancient 12th century Cistercian abbey. Nélie Jacquemart-André, widow of the banker Edouard André, bought the domain in 1902. She decorated the Chateau with furniture paintings and object d’art spanning from the antiquity to the Empire period. At her death in 1912 she bequeathed this domain to the Institut de France. One can admire the numerous lounges, libraries, bedrooms, boudoirs all with marked furniture in a lavish, but good taste, décor.
