The Chantilly Lace
The Chantilly lace, using white or black silk spindles. “Continuous thread” lace, meaning that the background, the pattern an the braid’s passage are executed at the same time, as well as the foot and the picot on the edges of the lace; The Chantilly Lace design is of floral inspiration: bouquets, vases with flowers, foliage garlands
The lace’s base was originally a diamond shaped network of stitches called “Chant” (edgeways) then a quicker network method was introduced: the Tulle base hexagonal stitches The designs are drawn by local artists, in Chantilly we know of Pierre Landry (father & Son) end of 18th early 19th century
During Napoleon III’s reign “Chantilly Lace” was very fashionable. Numerous pieces of clothing and accessories were created in Chantilly lace: shawls, veils, fans, sunshades, collars, cravats and numerous
Flounces of all sizes that would go in the making of skirts and blouses
One can still visit the Lace Museum located in town and admire the exhibitions, the duchesse d'Aumale’s dress and upon request watch the lace being made using spindles every Wednesday afternoon.
