The Condé Museum


The Condé museum is the duc d’Aumale’s creation. Whilst in exile in England he collected paintings, furniture, books which are all on display in the Château de Chantilly…

The Condé museum, one of France’s most prestigious heritages and is the first museum for classical paintings after the Louvre.

The painting galleries contain world renowned masterpieces.  Rooms after rooms next to one another 16th to the 19th century Italian and French masterpieces are to be seen. Many would be astonished to find famous paintings and drawings usually found in history books: Champaigne, Poussin,  Carrache, Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, François Clouet not forgetting Raphael’s “Les Trois Graces” and many more.
Vases, Bronze, Terracotta Statuettes, Stained-glass, porcelain, marble are all the facets of the collections of the time
The Chateau’s library is one of the most prestigious in the world, it contains medieval bookbinding covered in gold and jewels. The Duc d’Aumale built up a collection of rare books (30 000 volumes) and painted manuscripts (approx. 300), of which the famous “Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry” (15th century) or Jean Fouquet’s 40 miniatures the incunabula.

You can also discover:

  • a mineralogical cabinet from the cabinet maker Haupt, given to the Prince de Condé by the King of Sweden,
  • Chinese style panelling by Huet, chests of drawers, bronzes, desks all signed by the most prestigious makers
  • Furniture by J.B. Sené, coming from Louis XVI's brother, Comte de Provence (later King Louis XVIII)
  • The state "Monkey" room, a unique room, decorated with 18th century paintings with allegories of war, hunting, music, architecture and the alchemy of the four parts of the world and the five senses.
  • The main staircase displays a single piece ramp made by the Moreau brothers and one can also see a Gobelins’ Tapestry
  • The Chapel, built in 1882 and dedicated to St Louis, has two parts: one for the altar, the other to house the monument built in 1662 to preserve the hearts of the Condé Princes
