Mother of Pearl and Tablettery Museum
Meru is the capital of Mother of Pearl, situated some twenty kilometres from Chantilly.
The Museum opened in 1999, housed in a 19th century brick building. Originally a buttons factory it has been entirely renovated and classed in the inventory of Historical monuments.
The button originated in Asia at the very beginning of our era, it only appeared in Europe in the Middle Ages. It was in the Oise, in Meru, that the tableterry activity was the most important; billions of buttons were produced. As early as the 17th century the tablettiers made luxury goods such as fans, binoculars, brooches, cutlery, jewels, from natural raw materials such as pearl oysters, shells, horns, scales, for the Parisian wholesalers.
You will successively see :
- The raw materials used in the 17th Century by the tablettiers
- The making of a mother of pearl button
- The most beautiful pieces from the collection
- The discovery cabinets where you will see tablettery objects in their context
- The "Minelle" workshop with its tools, workbenches, and its half finished objects
