The Princes’ Kitchen Garden
NEW!! Discover the « Lapinodrome » (the rabbits race course) and its rabbit village…. Everyday at 3:30pm cheer on your favourite rabbit in a wild obstacle race !!
- On entering, the visitor discovers behind these walls, tall trees and the soft undulation of the site. A thicket alley with hickories (romantic park) leads to a pond designed in the 19th century, linked to two other basins dating to the 17th century.
- Turning right, the visitor will find himself in a secluded part, converted into a poultry-farm. Five hen-houses present in an esthetical and original way breeds of hens where the colours of the feathers will fill both young and old with wonder. This
educational section reminds visitors that once a pheasantry stood here.
- A little further on you come to the pheasants, twenty aviaries prove that there are more than a hundred species throughout the world.
- The tour then descends towards the Tenaille bassin with its romantic bridges and grottos. This part has been converted into a fantasy garden.
- Following the pond, gazebos house pigeons, displayed “by shape”: "curly", "peacock", bowled", "capuchin"… the visitor then moves on to the orchard with its fig-trees - this part housed the Grand Condé's fig trees plantation.
- At present the Kitchen Garden: it is truly a flowered kitchen garden, divided into eight rectangles, where the vegetables are separated by flowers, not only for aesthetics but to respect the horticultural tradition of yesteryears.
- Below the second terrace 40 squares of medicinal and condiment plants have been laid out.
- The tour finishes by the visit of a 19th century Rose Garden.
The outdoor theatre wakes up during the summer evenings: Plays by Molière, Beaumarchais, Racine, Boileau and other authors are performed. Discover this ancient garden designed for the Condé Princes by André le Nôtre.
